Welcome to Biochemistry and Molecular Biology
|
Biochemistry and Molecular Biology is a major discipline in the School of Biomedical, Biomolecular and Chemical Sciences. It is unique amongst Australian universities in the depth of its research into metabolic biochemistry and nutrition, in addition to its strong biomedical and genetics programs. The Discipline is housed in the School's new $65M Molecular and Chemical Sciences building with access to it's state-of-the-art laboratories and equipment.
Biochemistry attracts high quality students into its undergraduate and postgraduate teaching and research programs. Its academic staff teach undergraduate students undertaking degrees in agriculture, science and medicine, and support large molecular biology and genetics programs.
The Discipline has strong research links with others within and outside the University. It has national and international collaborative links and encourages higher degree and research links with industry and government organisations. Members of the Discipline are engaged in supervising BSc Hons, MSc and PhD students in a variety of research programs. These include oxygen sensing and cell function; signal transduction networks and their cellular effects; metabolic control of lactation; metabolic depression mechanisms of action of pyruvate carboxylase; histidine kinases; regulation of gene expression during liver development; gene regulation in haemopoietic cells; expression of oncogenes; structural studies of proteins; DNA interactions; delivery of bio-active molecules to intracellular targets; metabolism of steroidogenic tissues; site-directed mutagenesis of active site residues of cytochrome P-450; plant mitochondria and symbiotic nitrogen fixation. | | Biochemistry and Molecular Biology M310 School of Biomedical, Biomolecular & Chemical Sciences The University of Western Australia 35 Stirling Highway Crawley WA 6009 | | | | | | |
